New Jersey Department of Health Building

With a need for consolidation, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority envisioned a new Department of Health building in Trenton, New Jersey, to modernize its facilities. HDR, with an extensive and growing background in health facilities and office space, was selected for the task. Our team took great care to provide office space for many different groups while weaving the building into a historic residential neighborhood.

The building consolidates multiple Department of Health groups, including Medical Marijuana/Opioid, Philep, HIV/AIDS, Family Health Services, Vital Statistics and the Commissioner’s office, and support groups.

The site is adjacent to a 1930s vintage historic state office building at the corner of West Hanover Street and North Willow Street and the building was set back on W. Hanover to respect the adjacent urban fabric. HDR also chose brick as the primary building façade material to integrate the new facility into the residential neighborhood.

Local art, commissioned by local artists, was integrated into both the streetscape, exterior and interior of the building to further engage the community at the pedestrian level as well as provide connections to the area.

With the consolidation of facilities into a modern building that features local artwork, the hope is that the project will help to stimulate additional development in the area in Trenton.
